Bryn Geffert: A Conversation about Open Access, Academic Values, and New Publishing Models

  • UVM Gund Institute 210 Colchester Ave Farrell Hall 005 Burlington United States (map)

Can we imagine UVM faculty endorsing an open access resolution? How can the Libraries partner with the Gund and other units on campus to launch new and nationally recognized publishing ventures?

Bryn Geffert is the new dean of libraries at the University of Vermont. He previously served as library director at St. Olaf College, the U.S. Military Academy, and Amherst College. Bryn's research focuses on Russian social and intellectual history. He is finishing a book for the University of Notre Dame Press on Old Catholics and the Russian Orthodox Church. The establishment of the Amherst College Press may be Bryn's proudest achievement, followed closely by Amherst College's partnership with the University of Michigan to establish the Lever Press, an initiative supported by fifty-six other institutions. These ventures reflect his commitment to equitable and universal access to scholarship and the creation of new, open-access models to achieve that goal.
